Superintendent - M&R Crane Shop
The Crane Superintendent will be responsible for the efficient and cost effective execution and supervision of the labor involved in the maintenance and repair of all cranes and crane related equipment while maintaining and preserving positive labor relations.

Essential Duties:
- Secures, evaluates and directs crane technicians, ensuring high levels of productivity and quality repairs.
- Provides comprehensive work direction, through the foreman, to all labor at the beginning of each work assignment and a follow-up assessment upon completion.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of union contracts, ensuring adherence to policy and contract procedures.
- Complies with area accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures, and provides training sessions and on-going feed-back to labor.
- Supports profitability goals through effective and efficient labor management.
- Assist in establishing shop procedures, practices, and policies to effectively and efficiently address safety, maintenance, and environmental needs to the cranes and other equipment while maintaining availability for operational needs.
- Keeps coworkers and operations staff informed of work status and problems as they arise.
- Use Mainpac (asset management software) to plan and document all related costs, inventories and job planning.
- Evaluate and select outside contractors and vendors who can provide quality products and services at the best price.
- Analyzes equipment status, determining and recommending modification, improvement and new equipment needs, ensuring full and safe operating efficiency.
- Actively participates in the improvement and enhancement of operational procedures and systems by providing ideas and feed-back.
- Works closely with Crane Manager to coordinate repair and maintenance activities with operating requirements, and to arrange down time for repairs and maintenance.
- Assists the Crane Manager in planning and develops schedules for maintenance and repair of equipment while ensuring that tools and replacement parts are available. Ensure that preventative maintenance is included in repair schedules.
- Completes other tasks and projects as assigned.
- Observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment
Minimum Requirements (Education, Experience, Certifications):
- Minimum High School Diploma, GED or equivalent degree required
- A Four year college degree in Engineering or related discipline is a plus
- Three years experience in a managerial/supervisory role, supervising Technician Labor in a maintenance/shop environment a plus.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Card and a Maryland Port Authority Badge.
- A valid Driver’s License in good standing is required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to supervise a highly technical union staff in repairing container cranes, rubber tire gantry cranes, and container spreaders
- Requires the ability to plan and organize multiple projects in fast paced environment
- Requires ability to respond quickly in a fast paced environment
- Requires the ability to communicate effectively with union labor and PA staff
- Ability to understand and work from electrical and mechanical engineering drawingsand ability to understand and work from electrical and mechanical engineering drawings
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations and related industry governmental regulations
- Requires the availability to work varied hours and shifts including days, nights and holidays as needed.
Working Conditions:
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, occasional sitting
- The ability to climb up and down a ladder multiple times within a shift
- Must comply with all Ports America personal protection regulations including wearing a harness when working at heights.
- The ability to work at high elevations (150 feet or higher)
- Requires physical ability to work on a ship and in a yard
- The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions and conditions of high levels of noise
- The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment
