Payroll Accountant

A well-known professional services organization is looking to add a Payroll Accountant to our team in Charlotte, North Carolina. This position will report to the Controller and will champion the responsibilities for bi-weekly, multi-state payroll processing and review.


Primary Responsibilities:

GL functions:

  • Prepare and post journal entries
  • Prepare and analyze account reconciliations
  • Assist with annual external audit and workman’s compensation audit


Payroll functions:

  • Perform payroll/timesheets operations
  • Manage workflow to ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely
  • Communicate with the Human Resources Department to ensure the integrity of the payroll data including data related to new hires, terminations, transfers, and rate changes
  • Reconcile payroll prior to processing and validate confirmed reports
  • Understand proper taxation of employer-paid benefits
  • Process correct garnishment calculations and ensure compliance
  • Perform compliance procedures for unclaimed payroll checks
  • Handle accurate and timely tax remittances
  • Respond to employees' and managers' inquiries


Reporting functions:

  • Prepare daily cash reports for management
  • Process accurate and timely quarterly and year-end reporting (941, W-2, W-2c, etc.)
  • Prepare year-end employee-related summary report, (e.g. salary, vacation balances)
  • Prepare a bi-weekly report for employee 401k contributions
  • Report and reconcile employee flexible plan contributions
  • Assist with the preparation of other reports provided to management (e.g. monthly timesheet reports)


Other functions:

  • Process manual checks, wires, and ACH transfers
  • Document policies, procedures, and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility
  • Conform with and abide by all regulatory guidance and internal policies & procedures
  • Ad Hoc analyses as needed


Skills/Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5 years of experience in payroll accounting
  • Must have Ultimate Software/Kronos/UKG experience
  • Working knowledge of payroll best practices
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent skills using MS Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint experience preferred
