Packaging Engineer

Overview:
The packaging engineer is the key subject matter expert in every aspect of product packaging for our client's products. The Packaging Engineer will improve the packaging materials and methods for internal work in process, including work in transit to outside suppliers, and final packaging to the customer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
Design and develop processes to standardize and optimize packaging for WIP and Customer Shipments considering all design and process requirements. Create process documentation and detailed packing instructions for critical, specialty applications. Create process documentation and generic packing instructions for improved standard ways of working. Examine existing packaging methods and implement improvements. Participate in or lead the root cause investigation of nonconformances resulting from handling or shipping damage. Prepare budgetary and detailed cost estimates of packaging systems to ensure economic feasibility and to support the quotation process. Perform risk assessments of various packaging strategies. Develop effective relationships with packaging suppliers and our client's production personnel to support continuous improvement of our packaging strategy and tactics. Develop effective relationships with key customer personnel involved in packaging decisions. Review customer designed packaging for suitability and completeness, proposing value added solutions to supplement the customer design when needed. Lead packaging reviews (dry runs and tear downs) with stakeholders to ensure the effectiveness of new and legacy packaging systems. Work with the Quality and Operations departments to facilitate training in new Ways of Working. Mentor other engineers in packaging considerations, Ways of Working and best practices. Identify capital equipment required to support the packaging process. Propose layouts to improve workflow and efficiency in the packaging area(s). Knowledge:
To perform the job successfully, an individual must demonstrate the following competencies:
Working knowledge of Solid works is required. Knowledge of Lean / Six Sigma continuous improvement concepts is highly desirable.
Skills Required:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings, specifications, and procedures. Computer Aided Design skills sufficient to design packaging from concept resulting in detailed models and drawings suitable for production using Solid works software. Excellent computer skills with strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Power Point and Word. Ability to facilitate problem solving with team members using tools such as 8-D, 5-Whys, etc. Strong project management skills including the ability to prepare and maintain project plans in MS Project. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Lean Six Sigma certification or experience a plus and experience in a 5S environment is highly desirable. Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Education and/or Experience:
BS in Engineering (Industrial Engineering, Packaging Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) preferred. BS in another technical field of study may be considered. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification preferred. 2-5 years of experience in Packaging Engineering, operations, or a related field.
