Job Description
The Systems Engineering Manager (SEM) will provide direct leadership to the systems engineering team and across the company in the development of advanced Warfighter systems, products, and capabilities to meet emerging customer needs for the connected battlefield. The scope of product capabilities will include (but is not limited to) night vision, soldier-borne computing and power, man/machine teaming, communications, and shared situational awareness. The SEM is responsible for leading the Systems Engineering Team who are accountable for technical project leadership, system architecture development, system requirements development and management, and technical guidance across the engineering department and within Integrated Project Teams (IPT), also serve as tech leads on proposals. The SEM is responsible for the system engineering departmental structure and staffing, as well as ensuring the appropriate system engineering competencies, processes, design tools, and culture are in place to successfully carry out product and technology development and execute to the strategic plan of the company.
As systems engineering is by nature a cross-discipline activity, this position requires a highly collaborative and engaged leader who will work across engineering disciplines, as well as across the Product Strategy and Business Development teams to understand customer needs and capability gaps. Strong communications and interpersonal skills coupled with an appreciation and interest in growing the Warfighter Systems market is required. The SEM’s responsibility includes cross-functional collaborative work with Quality, Product Transition, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Program Management, and Finance to qualify new products and transition them into production.

Education Qualifications:
This position requires close collaboration across the engineering leadership team in Roanoke, VA as well as direction, coaching, and problem solving for the local engineering department. May also be collaboration with other business units. As such, it is preferred to be an onsite, full time position at the Roanoke, VA facility. Hybrid/remote applicants may be considered with appropriate experience in leading remote teams of this type.

- Lead the Systems Engineering Team

- Effectively engage in staff planning that helps to ensure the department is appropriately staffed to accomplish its goals and objectives
- Efficiently delegate tasks so that organizational goals are met within established timelines
- Assess / verify candidate qualifications thoroughly to recognize and hire (or promote) those who possess the skills needed to fulfill vacant positions and elevate team performance
- Guide capability, process, and tool development in collaboration with BD, Product Strategy, Product Transition, and Engineering leadership to level-up our overall product development, qualification and launch capabilities
- Develop, refine, implement, and train individuals and teams to establish a strong product development capability employing agile practices and model-based engineering tools
- Be the champion for a collaborative, bold, and engaged team
- Lead the Systems Engineering team in the performance of the following essential functions:
- The lead SE will serve as the primary R&D Engineer on the IPT
- Analyze customer requirements and translate into product concepts, system architectures, technical requirements, and test plans in support of the IPT
- Allocate system function between optical, mechanical, software, and electronic requirements
- Oversee the fabrication of the proof of concept, prototype and engineering development models of the systems
- Participate in the initial testing and subsequent design revision of the systems
- Oversee the transition of products from R&D to production to ensure an efficient transition and high product quality
Education Qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree in Engineer or Physics (PhD preferred)
- 5 years of successful experience in leading an engineering team or large IPT
- Ability to manage work of senior level system engineers and test engineers.
- Experience in being a project engineer or lead systems engineer allocating functions and requirements to different major components and subassemblies based on the optimum overall system performance
- Experience as a project engineer or lead systems engineer in establishing and tracking system/component development schedules
- Must have good skills in use of software to predict system performance and to track progress on programs
- Must be able to effectively communicate design and engineering requirements to individuals and team members
- Ability to estimate development cost for projects
- Able to work as part of a design team
- Ability to lead and inspire department staff to accomplish successful business results by working effectively in teams while solving technical problems
- Recognized leadership abilities and willingness to take initiative
- Ability to implement departmental strategic goals and monitor their progress
- Provide thorough, accurate information to answer customers’ questions and to meet commitment times or performance guarantees
- Actively look for ways to help customers (internal and external) by identifying and proposing appropriate solutions and/or services, adjusting services based on customer feedback
- An understanding of how to direct programs & projects through agile project management, lean manufacturing, and good supply chain management

- Advanced knowledge of the defense and military industry with specific knowledge about the customer base for the assigned product

- Be able to develop and generate a number of different approaches to problems
