Job Description

Job Summary

The driver is responsible for moving/spotting trailers for both plants with very short notice. The driver will perform an inspection of the tractor(s) at the start of each day and is responsible to inform the Supervisor of any mechanical problems the tractor(s) may have to keep them in top running condition. The driver will also inspect the fleet of leased trailers to keep them in good working order and to ensure they are spotted so that legs have a suitable base. This position also has responsibilities for safely and accurately loading and offloading bulk chemical products as assigned. Ensure proper, safe, clean and efficient movement/handling of company bulk products in tank trailers and railcars. This position reports to the Logistics Supervisor.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Provides daily accountability of leased trailers throughout the plant(s) as well as non-leased requiring to be unloaded.
  • Moves trailers throughout Dixie site at direction of both S&R and Operations personnel. Move trailers off site to trailer wash or for pickup of product & raw materials.
  • Required every weekday morning to gather all shipment paperwork that might have shipped over night and forward to the Shipping Supervisor.
  • Must practice all DOT rules both in the plant as well as out on the road. Driver must ensure trailers are sealed before moving them.
  • Required to climb and inspect trailers after cleaning to ensure the barrel has been cleaned and all caps, fittings, valves are back together and in working condition.
  • Assist other drivers in spotting and moving trailers especially those who are not accustomed to driving in the plant.
  • Follow procedures for product filtration, sampling, labeling, and documentation
  • Manually gauge and sample tanks and tank trailers
  • Load and offload over-the-road (OTR) tank trailers and railcars
  • Filter all shipments coming from shore tanks loading into OTR tank trailers and railcars
  • Sort, grade, weigh, and inspect products, verifying and adjusting product weight or measurement to meet specifications
  • Line up transfer lines from the tank or tank trailer to tank truck
  • Attach identification labels to tank truck
  • Enter product information (i.e., product movement) into computer systems (i.e., Labsoft, Sage, Label Maker)
  • Follow OSHA, DOT, and Dixie Chemical regulations
  • Assist packaging and warehouse personnel in day-to-day activities as needed

  • Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
  • Monitoring — Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Operation Monitoring — Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly

  • Working knowledge of tankers and vans including brake and hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshooting/problem solving skills
  • Experience in knowing the cleanliness of tankers and parts to inspect to ensure it is clean.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, & Outlook; Basic math skills,
  • Have CDL, endorsed in triple-doubles, Haz-Mat certified
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of experience in driving and pulling/spotting trailers
  • Proven experience in driving and spotting tankers and vans in very tight places.
  • Able to work 11-12 hours/day Monday through Friday
  • Able to work weekends and some holidays if called upon

Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. This job may require the following: walking primarily on a level surface throughout the day; occasional climbing up ladders on tanks & tank trailers; operating forklift; moving drums and pallets when needed; reaching above shoulder heights and below the waist to lift as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday; and lift up to 55 pounds on occasion. Proper lifting techniques are required.

Primary environment: split between ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment, outside, and non-air-conditioned warehouse found within a chemical manufacturing plant. Certain areas in the manufacturing plant and warehouse require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields, hard hat, safety boots, and mandatory hearing protection.
