Salary Range *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential. What Your Job Will Be Like We are seeking a computational scientist passionate about shock hydrodynamics and electromagnetic effects with a specific interest in scientific C++ software and algorithm development to join our mature multiphysics code development and analysis team. Our team has a strong culture of collaboration and prides itself in the development of high-quality code, which involves extensive testing, verification, validation, and peer review. The selected candidate will be encouraged to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to thrive in a growing, fast-paced technical environment. This position requires a significant interaction with other team members in the department and good interpersonal skills are highly desired. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * Design and implement algorithms in various code environments associated with shock hydrodynamics, computational electromagnetism, magnetohydrodynamics and plasma physics * Work closely with other staff members in research and development of multiphysics methods and analysis codes * Perform fundamental multiphysics software development and code architecture design * Develop finite element models and perform engineering analysis for internal and external sponsors on problems of national interest in the areas of energy and defense * Work on serial, MPI parallel, and GPU performance aspects of multiphysics codes * Develop and enhance advanced Arbitrary-Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) simulation technologies * Develop problems and procedures to verify algorithms with respect to theory * Collaborate closely with applications customers and build working relationships that provide a foundation for production delivery of validated tools * Flexibly contribute to a variety of approaches for modeling within software frameworks that may include advanced Arbitrary-Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) and Cartesian grid adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) * Publish progress in conferences and refereed journals Qualifications We Require * PhD in engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related area * Experience with the Python and C++ programming languages * Evidence of relevant research achievements as proven in the form of technical publications, presentations, software tools, and/or knowledge of applications * Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire * Ability to work in a collaborative research environment on problems in a variety of domains * Experience in collaborative, git-based production finite element or finite volume code development * A passion for impacting applications to problems of interest to the national defense * Expertise in computational geometry * Expertise in finite element mesh generation methods or software * Experience with developing and running complex science and engineering codes on massively parallel computing clusters, including GPU platforms * Experience using material models and equation of state models * Expertise in electromagnetics, electromechanics, and/or radiation hydrodynamics * Proficiency in code verification and modern software quality practices * Experience with Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) finite element methods * Excellent written and oral communication skills About Our Team Sandia's Computational Multiphysics Department 01443 develops unique, innovative multiphysics modeling and simulation capabilities. We are home to the ALEGRA application, targeted at the simulation of high strain rate, magnetohydrodynamic, electro-mechanic and high energy density physics phenomena for the U.S. defense and energy programs. The department conducts an active program of research and development in computational multiphysics methods, produces high-performance application codes that address relevant issues important to the DOE, DoD, DHS, and other U.S. Government agencies, supports production use of our codes by our principal customers, and performs engineering analysis of multiphysics problems of national interest.
