Purpose

The Machining Department Manager is responsible for oversight of the Warehouse, Assembly and Machining Departments and is accountable for daily operations of these departments while also implementing short and long term initiatives for the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading and managing the entire manufacturing process consisting of Lathe, Milling, Grinding, Assembly and Warehouse departments
  • Monitor adherence to the production schedule and make adjustments if necessary
  • Ensure departmental compliance with regards to production, delivery, quality, and cost objectives
  • Monitor labor hours and overtime, plan work, delegate duties, and make work assignments for direct reports
  • Recognize and implement opportunities to increase production efficiency through increased speed, load balancing, cross training, automation, technology, and general process improvements
  • Establish and maintain preventative maintenance schedule for all machine shop equipment
  • Plan and implement 5-S and continuous improvement activities for all shop operations
  • Develop and monitor metrics and goals for each department to execute, which align with the overall company goals and objectives
  • Ensure cost effective inventory levels of production supplies are maintained to meet production requirements
  • Develop and maintain process documentation for all functions and processes
  • Responsible for reviewing existing PM schedules and ensuring execution. Identify and resolve gaps
  • Be an active member of strategy and budgetary discussions, and be responsible for adherence to both
  • Focus on professional development by providing managerial support and training to direct reports
  • Lead planning and implementation for production methods for new and existing products and technologies
  • Work with Director of HR on all Production department personnel/HR topics including: hiring, reviews, recognition, disciplinary, attendance, training, development, and grievances
  • Ensure adherence to all safety standards

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with programming and operating machine shop equipment is required; specifically Swiss Lathe, Mills and Grinders
  • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills required
  • Communication skills - strong written, verbal and presentation communication skills
  • Familiarity with ERP systems, ideally Netsuite
  • Be comfortable on the plant floor as well as interacting with top level customers and suppliers

  • Physical Demands: May sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day. Finger dexterity to operate office equipment is required. May need to lift up to twenty (20) pounds occasionally. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively. A minimum of forty (40) work hours are expected per week during company operating hours. Very limited travel may be required.
  • Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in a general office environment with standard office equipment as well as a shop floor environment.
