JOB DESCRIPTION

The structural designer positions are responsible for the generation of structural discipline drawings and 3D models. The structural designers work under the guidance of senior designers and engineers. A structural designer is also responsible for the quality, and administrative aspects of the drawings and models produced. The following summary details the responsibilities:

1. Core Skills –structural designers must be proficient in Autodesk Revit, Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Navisworks. The ability to use Advance Steel, Tekla and other software is desirable but not required. structural designers must be proficient at reading drawings, drawing layout and standard drafting conventions.

2. Scope - The structural designer positions are responsible for generating structural steel and concrete drawings based on designs provided by senior designers, engineers and from general arrangement drawings produced by other disciplines. Occasional trips to projects job sites may be required to make field measurements and gather information. Designers will be expected to coordinate and interact with other departments/disciplines for successful project completion. The structural designers are responsible for following the project scope documents. Scope documents include:

a. Scope of Work – defines project deliverables and schedules

b. Discipline Narrative/Execution Plan – defines the details of the discipline design

c. Specifications – defines the details of construction materials and methods to be used in the project.

The purpose of these scope documents is to communicate the project objectives to the client, project manager, and design team. These documents specify the project deliverables and schedule.

3. Schedule – The structural designer positions are responsible for following the project schedule as defined in the scope documents.

4. Budget – The structural designer positions are responsible for asking about budget allotted for assigned tasks, tracking their hours for those tasks.

5. Quality – The structural designer positions are responsible for producing drawings and models that comply with CAD standards and/or client CAD standards as applicable. Structural designers are responsible for producing accurate drawings and models and may be called on to check the work of fellow employees.

6. Execution Plan – The structural designer positions are responsible for aiding in the execution of the Project Execution Plan, communicating areas of risk and delays to the lead/responsible engineer, and sometimes aiding in the development of the Project Execution Plan.

At all times during the execution of the project, the structural designer positions are responsible for aiding in the maintenance of the scope documents, schedule, budget, and quality. The designer positions are responsible for following the project execution plan; this includes updating the lead engineer and/or project manager on the status of upcoming items in the execution plan. Throughout the execution of the project, the designer positions are responsible for reconciling all scope, schedule, and budget issues for their tasks by maintaining the proper project documentation (e.g., telephone confirmations, meeting minutes, needs lists). All conversations and issues involving the scope, schedule, and budget are to be discussed with the lead/responsible engineer and the project manager and then documented. The structural designer must assure that the proper information is available for their assigned tasks such that the project can proceed efficiently (on schedule and on budget).
