Johnson Matthey (JM) is increasingly globalising its R&D and Innovation, using a wider range of open innovation and corporate venturing toolsets to tap into ecosystems and drive value for JM. JM has established ecosystems in US (Boston, Houston, NY), UK, an Israel; and is building out in China and Europe.

The role sits within the Corporate Excellence Innovation office and its purpose is to develop and maintain JMs position in key ecosystems creating future business options for the organisation, and building JMs capability in Open Innovation by partnering with the business units.

Your responsibilities:

  • To act as a Business Partner for open innovation, providing guidance on tool options, training to business teams and practical support to deploy OI tools and engage / partner with start-ups.

  • To act as the key contact for agreed ecosystems, with responsibility for developing engagement plan and executing against plans/KPIs.

  • To design and run key ecosystem events to drive awareness, internally and externally

  • To be the point of access for agreed ecosystems and market JM; Start Ups, SMEs, Academia, Innovation Service Providers

  • To own the continual development and deployment of the open innovation strategic tools in JM, including running accelerators/Start-up as a service.

  • To increase the understanding and use of Open Innovation Strategic tools across JM.

  • To work closely with business teams, as required, within the support framework.

  • To monitor key KPIs and make recommendations to improve innovation process, procedures and toolsets.

Requirements for the role:

  • Demonstrable experienced leading and running an incubator / accelerator; either externally or within a corporate setting, including assessing and supporting start-up businesses

  • Experience in building relationships across ecosystem players startups, vc funds, incubators, universities

  • Background in Science or Engineering

  • Experience negotiating terms and collaborations agreements (JDA, commercial, investment)

  • Understanding of financing / investment structures across lifecycle of a start-up (from pre-seed to Series D/E+) is desirable

  • Experience working with government funding agencies / building relationships within government backed agencies is beneficial

  • Confident and convincing presenting and influencing skills
