Essential Functions

  • Gather customer requirements for the design of automated and semi-automated train driving systems.
  • Prepare technical proposals including clause-by-clause comments to customer specifications.
  • Prepare systems documentation including requirements specs, schematics, etc.
  • Define and perform commissioning tests for automated and semi-automated train driving systems.
  • Perform functional and software validation testing.
  • Assist senior engineers and field service engineering staff.
  • Develop interface control documents.
  • Perform system-level Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
  • Develop Verification and Validation Test Procedure.
  • Make technical presentations to customers in support of sales.
  • Create project schedules and budgets; lead sales/application projects.
  • Must understand and support all Quality, Product Safety, and Health/Safety/Environmental/Energy policies.
  • Must understand and adhere to all relevant statutory or regulatory compliance obligations.
  • Must understand, support, and adhere to the Integrated Management System policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Must understand and support relevant key performance indicators (KPIs), as defined in the goal tree.

Skills and Competencies

  • Has a solid understanding of mechanical systems and can derive and develop an understanding of long heavy trains?
  • Has a solid understanding of autonomous systems and can derive and develop a solid understanding of automated and semi-automated train driving.
  • Understands requirements analysis, allocation, and traceability.
  • Understands engineering analysis-fluid dynamics, fundamental electrical, elemental software.
  • Understands imperial and metric units of measure.
  • Understands configuration management.
  • Has the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Has or can develop working knowledge of NYAB Engineering systems and procedures.
  • Understands FMECA analysis.
  • Understands scheduling, budgeting, planning, and project management.
  • Communication Skills - Comprises the ability to speak, present, write, listen, and distribute information effectively and create an environment for open communication.
  • Analytical Thinking - Refers to collecting, analyzing, and structuring information using a wide perspective to identify key issues and patterns as well as to drawing conclusions.
  • Teamwork - Means the ability to work with others and build a positive climate and trusting relationships within teams.
  • Adaptability & Flexibility - Includes the ability to build networks, work successfully in various, complex, changing, and challenging environments and with diverse people.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
The employee will be required to perform duties on a computer terminal. The employee may be exposed to a rail environment, i.e., noise, heat, cold, dust/dirt etc.

Physical Demands
The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of an office work environment position, in addition to being able to work and travel to a from rail assets and climb onto and from locomotives.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Physics
  • 2-5+ Years of Relevant Engineering

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Physics
  • 5-7+ years of experience
