Building/Code Official

Due to a retirement, the City of Wood Dale has an opening for a full-time Building/Code Official. This is a highly professional and responsible position within the Community Development Department. This position is responsible for professional and administrative duties related to the daily performance of departmental operational assignments associated with building permit code interpretations, building permit applications, permit tracking, and plan review. This includes expediting the permit and plan review process and ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures, adopted codes, and City ordinances. Work often involves extensive public contact and effective coordination with contractors, architects, residents, and other City departments. The Building/Code Official reports directly to the City Manager.


The Building/Code Official is responsible for all building code interpretations and inspection requirements. Extensive knowledge of construction practices, codes, and land use planning concepts is required. The ability to calculate figures and formulas involved in building, code enforcement, zoning, and other codes is also required. The successful candidate must possess strong organizational, customer service, and communication skills. Work requires the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines. Typical hours are 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required as needed.


Associate's Degree with a minimum of 7 years of related building inspection and administration experience and a minimum of 3 years at a supervisory level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills required of a Building Administrator. ICC certifications in plan review and inspection disciplines are required; additional ICC certificates are preferred and will be required as part of a continuing education program with continued progress towards the Certified Building Official (CBO) accreditation.


The salary range is $82,629-$109,872 depending upon qualifications and work experience. Excellent benefits include Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund; paid vacation and sick leave accrual; medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
