As a part of OptumHealth, Optum SCA Health is seeking a Vice President Practice Operations.

The Vice President of Practice Operations will work closely with the Optum Specialty Practices team and other senior executives in execution of an independent specialist partnership strategy for the Specialty Practice Division. The focus of this individual will be to establish and manage joint ventures with specialty practices across the country and represent the Specialty Practice team at an executive level with the physician and administrative leadership of those practices, as well as internally with other SCA Health, Optum and UHG leadership.

A key component of the role will be a deep understanding of the needs and challenges facing most specialty groups, the value propositions and levers that Specialty Practice can bring to a practice, quickly assess the landscape and coordinate the appropriate internal and external resources to develop and validate those propositions and ultimately drive an actionable strategic plan in partnership with the practice.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage relationships and joint ventures with specialty practices. Develop and execute change management process for prospective partnerships, act as a strategic advisor to the practices, and represent Specialty Practices stakeholders’ long-term strategy
  • Lead advisor representing OSP to physician practices, directing OSP corporate resources as needed (Development, Contracting, Operations, Legal, etc). Responsible for driving success and growth strategy for the Joint Ventures. Regular communication to MSO leadership, shareholders, and staff. Participate on JV MSO Boards as needed
  • Business partner with practice to ensure successful execution of Mutual Accountability Action Plan (MAAP)
  • Support the VP of Business Development in moving transactions through the approval process
  • Coordinate and support operations, development and finance teams in acquiring information and validating assumptions that are critical to closing transactions
  • Drive the strategy and action plan development for prospective practices during diligence
  • Quickly assess the dynamics and culture of prospective practices and skilfully navigate the groups decision making process
  • Develop the overall strategy and role that the Specialty Practice division can play in an aligned Optum ambulatory network in each geography working closely with the SCA Health local team to create a coordinated effort
  • Ensure a smooth handoff from development to operations by participating in the deal discussions and negotiations
  • Continuously refine the Specialty Practice value propositions to create compelling and clear messaging that will resonate with independent physicians

If you are located within 60 miles of Los Angeles or Orange County, CA, you will have the flexibility to telecommute* as you take on some tough challenges.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field
  • 8+ years of experience as the Senior Director or Vice President of Business Development, Sales, Client Management or Advisory role within a highly professional and successful healthcare services company
  • 8+ years of experience working with independent physician practices. Experience with proceduralists (orthopaedics, cardiology, ENT, urology, etc) preferred
  • 5+ years of experience working with or in Management Services Organization (MSO) or other entity that provides management and consultative services to physician practices
  • Experience working within a joint venture relationship
  • Willing to live in market and travel extensively, at least 50% or more per week

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or other Masters Level Degree
  • Clinical Degree
  • Proven track record of developing successful relationships and business partnerships with physicians
  • Experience supporting the Development team in negotiating deal terms and managing client relationship through closing
  • Ability to establish trust and long-term relationships
  • Confidence and demeanour to gain the respect of senior executives and physician leadership of independent specialty groups
  • Outstanding communication skills and executive presence
  • Solution-oriented
  • Team player who is able to perform at a high level and willing to roll up sleeves to support a small but growing team in any capacity needed
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, have a strong desire to succeed, and willingness to exert the extraordinary effort that will be required
