Job Description

From keeping the amenities and grounds clean to assisting with event setups, our Custodians are always on the move ensuring Indianapolis’ favorite destination is sanitized and safe for our guests and their families. Behind the scenes, our full-time (40 hours per week) Custodians work hard to set up our events, and keep our amenities, exhibits, and grounds clean. We are currently on the hunt to add an enthusiastic Custodian to our flock!

Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. A cooperative and team-oriented personality is vital to this position along with the ability to work relatively independent with limited supervision. A background in janitorial / custodial / housekeeping is highly desired. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supports the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.
  • Assists with non-catered event setups and season event setups such as CATZ, Zoo Boo, and Zoobilation.
  • Assists with snow and trash removal throughout Zoo grounds.
  • Cleans and vacuums event spaces to ensure cleanliness standards are maintains.
  • Has responsibility for daily stocking and cleanliness of restrooms, outdoor food service areas, general pathways, landscaping, benches, trashcans, and both carpeted and tiled areas.
  • Ensures all Zoo sanitation, chemical handling and safety standards are adhered to.
  • Maintains, the equipment at the Zoo, and maintains the buildings to the highest quality as requested. Keeps all equipment in good working order.
  • Ensures that Zoo safety standards are followed.

Working Requirements and Conditions:

  • Must be have flexible availability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Different shift work may be required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a driver’s license record insurable by the Zoo’s insurance.
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
  • Ability to detect, assess, identify and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio and telephone.
  • Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Blood borne Pathogens Guidelines. There is possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human blood borne pathogens. The option for Hepatitis B series is available.
  • Ability to frequently move from area to area while transporting items (up to 10 pounds) across Zoo grounds for various needs and the ability to position items (up to 20 pounds) short distances.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment testing including a criminal history and driving record check, and a drug test. The Indianapolis Zoo is requiring all Zoo employees and volunteers to be Covid-19 vaccinated unless individuals require a medical or religious belief accommodation. If hired, vaccination must be completed prior to first working day or accommodation request must be approved prior to first working day.
